Dental Implants
Getting the smile you’ve always wanted can do wonders for your confidence. When you look in the mirror, you want a full set of pearly whites smiling back at you. Whether your teeth have degraded due to disease or you suffered a mouth injury, Michael Capio, DDS, from Dental Solutions in Marina Del Rey, California, has the dental implant expertise you need to have a smile you can be proud of.
Dental Implants
Dental implants are artificial teeth that Dr. Capio inserts into your mouth which look and function as normal teeth. They’re made up of three parts: the implant, abutment, and crown.
The implant is a titanium post that Dr. Capio places through the gum into the bone. He then places an abutment on top of the implant to hold the crown in place.
A dental implant can anchor a single tooth, multiple teeth, or hold a bridge in place. Implants are incredibly durable, make it easier to eat normally, and they look and function just like your normal teeth.
First, Dr. Capio explains your options, and together you decide if dental implants are right for you. He then creates an individualized treatment plan for your implant. He uses computer-guided placement for implants, which allows him to place the tooth with even more precision than the human hand, making the entire procedure safer.
At your first visit, Dr. Capio surgically installs a small titanium post in the jawbone. Over the next three to six months, the jawbone heals around the implant. He then makes a digital impression of the missing tooth, and from this, a perfectly-matched tooth is created that fits into your smile.
During your next visit, Dr. Capio attaches an abutment the implant’s post. He then attaches the crown — your new tooth — to the abutment and holds it in place so you can enjoy the return of a full set of teeth. Most patients report minimal discomfort during the procedure. Afterward, Dr. Capio may suggest you take an over-the-counter pain medication such as Tylenol® to deal with mild soreness.
Dental implants require the same care as regular teeth. To take care of them, you still need to brush at least twice a day, floss daily and use an antibacterial mouthwash.
Most importantly, you should maintain your dental care schedule. Having dental checkups twice a year is vital to maintaining healthy teeth and gums. Together, you and your dental team can work to keep your smile healthy.
