A dental emergency is any problem which requires immediate attention to save or repair your tooth or to relieve pain. Dental emergencies include:
- A broken tooth
- A chipped tooth that is painful
- Lost crowns or fillings
- Broken braces or wires
- Injuries to the tongue, gums, or oral mucosa
- An abscessed tooth
If you’re in pain, are bleeding in your mouth or gums, or have injured your teeth, contact Dental Solutions immediately so they can provide you with relief.
If a tooth is knocked out but remains intact, it’s possible it can be put back into the socket, if you see Dr. Capio right away. If the tooth is completely dislodged, but still intact, you should:
- Pick the tooth up by the crown (not the roots)
- Rinse, but do not scrub the tooth
- Put the tooth in a cup of milk or small container
- Call Dr. Capio immediately
It there’s just a tiny chip in a tooth, it may not be an actual emergency. But you’ll need to be careful eating until you can get in to see Dr. Capio, so you don’t cause more damage to it. For a larger chip accompanied by pain, you’ll probably need a filling or a crown.
A cracked tooth may be able to be saved with a crown or a root canal, depending on the severity of the crack. If the tooth is beyond repair, you may need a dental implant. Using a digital impression of your teeth, Dr. Capio can create a perfect replacement in size, shape, and color of your old tooth.
Make sure you see Dr. Capio at least twice a year, to stay on top of your dental health and make sure your mouth and teeth are healthy. Although good oral hygiene can avoid many dental issues, you can’t foresee most emergencies and should seek quick treatment.
If you play contact sports, it’s important to wear a mouthguard to prevent your teeth from being chipped, knocked out, or broken. Avoid biting down on hard foods such as hard candy or ice, which can fracture your teeth.
If you have a dental emergency, call Dental Solutions. Allow Dr. Capio to treat your problem so you can experience relief.
