Teeth Whitening
Whether it’s result of drinking coffee or tea in the morning, or you’re on a medication that causes staining, yellowing on your teeth can be embarrassing. Fortunately, teeth whitening treatments are available which can give you back your bright smile. Michael Capio, DDS, at Dental Solutions offers professional teeth whitening treatments at his office in Marina Del Rey, California.

What is teeth whitening?
Over time, the teeth’s outer layer, called the enamel, can become yellow or darkened. Teeth whitening treatments can help remove the discoloration and brighten your teeth and give you a whiter smile. Treatments can be performed in a dentist’s office or at home, using an over-the-counter kit. To maintain whiter teeth, the procedure usually needs to be repeated every so often.
What kind of teeth whitening does Dr. Capio use?
Dr. Capio uses a leading in-office teeth whitening treatment called GLO®, which stands for guided light optics. The GLO system uses a professional-strength whitening gel and a closed mouthpiece, which prevents oxygen from escaping the mouth during treatment and allows for long-lasting results. A special light provides both warmth and light, which activates the teeth whitening solution.
Unlike other whitening procedures, GLO leaves no residue on the teeth after the treatment. It’s safe for use in patients with dental bonding, crowns, and veneers. With one in-office GLO treatment, patients typically achieve teeth that are five shades whiter than before treatment, with no sensitivity afterward.
After treatment, you can take the mouthpiece home. This mouthpiece comes with a guide, which shows you how to do whitening touch-up treatments at home to help maintain your results.
How do I keep white teeth after my whitening treatment?
There are several things you can do to prevent your teeth from becoming yellowed or stained again. For example, it’s recommended you avoid:
- Coffee or tea
- Red wine
- Sports drinks
- Colas
- Smoking
Of course, there are some uncontrollable factors which may affect the color of your teeth, including aging, illness, and side effects from certain medications.
Make sure you stay on top of your dental regimen by brushing twice a day and flossing at least once a day. Whitening toothpaste may help keep teeth clean after an appointment, too. If possible, touch-up appointments with Dr. Capio are the best bet for making sure your teeth remain white and bright for the long term.
